Sometimes you have a child (or children) born to a former partner that is no longer interested in maintaining his/her status as a parent. If you are married and would like your current spouse to officially adopt your child(ren), and as long as both biological parents are in agreement to terminate his/her parental rights, you could file for adoption with the clerk of courts.

You should keep in mind that if you ever divorce the adopting parent, (s)he will be entitled to fight for custody and timesharing, and will be liable for future child support. Please, see below for a list of what is included in the stepparent adoption package:

*Optional: 2 certified copies of the Final Judgment delivered to your preferred location ($20 plus court and delivery fees to be determined upon signature of the Final Judgment)

* Expedited adoption includes all of the above, but the turn-around time is 2 business days, and Final Judgment can usually be expected within 25 days of filing.
